2009 may be rough year for Badger Football

The first wave of preseason college football magazines has hit the newsstands and the consensus thought on the Wisconsin Badgers isn't all that flattering.
The Sporting News projects UW to finish seventh in the Big Ten Conference, but has it qualifying for the Insight.com Bowl.
Athlon Sports also projects the Badgers to finish seventh, but doesn't speculate on a bowl bid.
Both publications seem to like sophomore tailback John Clay, the fact a decent nucleus returns on the offensive line and the work of kicker Philip Welch.
But, like many Badgers fans, neither magazine is sold on incumbent quarterback Dustin Sherer or the lack of proven depth in the front seven on defense.
Athlon included thoughts on UW from an unnamed opposing coach. He said the premature departure of tailback P.J. Hill to the pros wasn't a big hit because Hill was "overrated.'' The most interesting bit of insight came regarding the unconventional offense used by the Badgers. "They are going to mash you,'' the coach said. "It's different because you're playing spread (offenses) every week and now you've got to go back and play a traditional offense. You aren't seeing it week in and week out.''
Athlon didn't have UW coach Bret Bielema on the hot seat with Notre Dame's Charlie Weis or Al Groh at Virginia, but Bielema is on its "getting warm'' list along with Indiana's Bill Lynch and Mike Sherman, the former Green Bay coach now running the show at Texas A&M.
Both Athlon and TSN pick Ohio State to win the Big Ten title.
